The Tin Man and the Gospel

A sculpture made of masking tape.

Abbreviation on the PEZ dispenser base and piece of PEZ candy: ESV (English Standard Version of the Bible).

Inspired by: Jeremiah 15:16a

“Your words were found, and I ate them,

and your words became to me a joy

and the delight of my heart.”

From Gill’s Exposition of the Entire Bible:

"God’s Word was as welcome to Jeremiah as food is to a hungry man; he cheerfully received them, treasured them up in his memory, digested them in his mind, and carefully retained them. So the doctrines of the Gospel, which are the words of God, and not of men, when by searching and close application they are found in the Scriptures, and under the ministry of the word, they are food to souls, sweet, savoury, wholesome, nourishing, and strengthening.”

Handwritten on the piece of PEZ candy:

Psalm 119:103 And How sweet are your words to my taste, sweeter than honey to my mouth!

Handwritten on the Tin Man’s heart:

Ezekiel 36:26 And I will give you a new heart, and a new spirit I will put within you. And I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh.

What is the Gospel?

The good news is that the holy, just, and gracious Creator of all things has looked upon hopelessly sinful men and women and their rebellion has sent his Son, Jesus Christ, God in the flesh, to bear his wrath against sin on the cross and to show his power over sin in the resurrection, so that everyone who turns from their sin and trusts in Him will be reconciled to God forever.

How are we saved by this Gospel?

The call to Christ is more than an invitation to just pray a prayer or to turn from sin (although that’s obviously a part of repentance). It’s a turning from self as lord, self as god, to Christ as Lord and Christ as God. It's belief in the fundamental truths of the Gospel, but not just believing those at an intellectual level. Even the demons believe in the death and resurrection of Jesus.

This part (left) was attached to the top surface of the closed flap (shown below in the open position) with Velcro for ease of transport. When the head was pushed backward, the PEZ "candy" was raised from inside the base, just as the original dispenser does.
